Longtime manager of Coolio’s, Jarez, revealed the rapper went to the bathroom at a friend’s house, but when he didn’t return for a while the friend kept calling his name, and finally went in and found Coolio laying on the floor.
A source say the friend called 911, but when EMT arrived they pronounced Coolio dead on the scene and manager Jarez said the paramedics suspect he suffered cardiac arrest. An official cause of death has yet to be determined.
The rapper, who’s real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., came up on the Los Angeles rap scene in the late 80s, but became well-known nationally in 1995 when he released “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the soundtrack of the film, “Dangerous Minds.”
The single reached #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks.
While ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ had become his signature hit, Coolio had several more hits including 1994’s “Fantastic Voyage,” which landed in the #3 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, “1,2,3,4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “It’s All the Way Live (Now).”
Coolio was only 59.
