I played a little piano, drums, and was even in chorus. I saw A Nightmare on Elm Street, when I was eight, and I would listen to the radio every night, trying to stay up so Freddie couldn’t get me. But mostly I rode skateboards, growing up in Rochester, N.Y. It was the eighties, and kids were allowed to roam freely.
I was told, by the older skaters, that I looked like a young Marlon Brando. I’m like, “Who’s
Marlon Brando?”, and they’re all “You aint seen the Godfather?!” Hence my education truly began. When I was thirteen, my mom moved me and my brother to Miami, Florida. To this day, I still have no idea what she did for a living, but she made sure we had everything we needed, and every opportunity available to us.
The main thing she taught me in life is to live a life that makes you truly happy. My dad taught me how to handle myself, back in New York. He taught me how to play the horses, and how to eat ice cream. He taught me how to drink right, and how to cook chicken curry. He taught me to be respectful, and trust God. He told me, “If you have something inside you that tells you when something is wrong or right, that is a special gift from God.” And that if you have this, you should never give it away.
I was blessed by God Almighty to be my dad’s son. He taught me, talk is cheap, and actions speak louder than words. He passed away in 2007, while I was incarcerated. I can still hear his voice. I started playing guitar in prison and got three college degrees, and when I came home, I got a Masters Degree in print journalism from University of Miami. Then I went out to California and skated and played guitar in the wilds.
Then the Lady on the Mountain traded me a computer for some weed and cigarettes,
and I got an Ableton beat pad, and I started downloading drum kits and making beats.
The featherbone is the feathers on the back of the arrow, that make it fly straight.
