On Thursday (October 13, 2022), The Hollywood Reporter made the announcement that the Grammy Awards decided not to put Minaj’s chart-topping song in the rap category. According to reports, the Rick James sampled single is now considered a pop single by The Academy and will therefore be competing for Best Pop Solo Performance. The first round of Voting for nominees began today and concludes on Oct. 23. The announcement for the 2023 Grammy nominees will happen on November 15, 2022. The Grammy’s award show will officially air live on CBS, on February 5, 2023.

The rapper has been nominated for 10 Grammy awards so far in her career but has won a gold gramophone as of yet. This will be the second time Minaj has been up for an award in the pop section. The first time she was nominated in the pop category was in 2015 for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with “Bang Bang” alongside Ariana Grande and Jessie J. Both Pink Friday and The Pinkprint were nominated for Best Rap Album.

It is not unusual for hip hop artists to be put in the pop category. Some great examples include Doja Cat’s “Say So” and rapper Post Malone’s “Better Now,” which were both nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance.

Media Music News has reached out to both Nicki’s team as well as the Grammy Awards for comment.

Back in August 2022 Nicki Minaj’s song “Super Freaky Girl” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As history has it, this is only the second solo song by a female rap artist to premiere at No. 1 on the chart, with the first being Lauryn Hill’s smash hit “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998. So far “Super Freaky Girl” has been No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart for consecutive eight weeks.
